Original Karungali Jap Mala Black Ebony Mala
This is a jap mala strung from beads of karungali, the dense black heartwood of the ebony tree, used as a counting tool for daily prayer and repetition.
Every order includes a certificate of authenticity, a care pouch and a polishing cloth.
In tradition, karungali is kept close for grounding and protection — a wood for staying rooted when the day pulls in every direction. It belongs to the Root, the steady place you return to.
For anyone drawn to it — no ritual or prior belief is required. Wear it as meaning, or simply as a piece you love.
- ✕Dyed or stained pale woods passed off as true black ebony
- ✕Lightweight beads that feel hollow in the hand
- ✕Uniform jet-black with no grain, the giveaway of heavy staining
- ◆Genuine karungali heartwood, dark by nature rather than by dye
- ◆Real density and heft, the weight you expect from ebony
- ◆Natural grain and subtle tonal variation left visible, not hidden
Karungali is prized for being naturally dark and dense, so the honest signals are about weight, grain and how it ages — things you can check by hand.

Real heft
True ebony is one of the densest woods. The mala should feel substantial and solid for its size — suspiciously light beads often mean a cheaper wood dressed up to look like ebony.

In tradition this piece is associated with Aries (मेष), Scorpio (वृश्चिक). Any such association is a matter of belief and custom — wear it as meaning, or simply as a piece you love.
Store it in its pouch when not worn, and keep it away from harsh chemicals and prolonged moisture.
The essentials.
It is strung as a traditional jap mala, which by convention carries 108 counting beads with an additional guru (meru) bead to mark the start and end of a round. The guru bead is not counted as the 109th in practice.
It is best kept dry. Like most woods, karungali can swell or lose its sheen with repeated soaking, so we suggest setting it aside before a bath and wiping it with a dry cloth rather than washing it.
Because the dark colour of genuine karungali is natural to the heartwood rather than a surface dye, it does not fade the way stained wood can. With regular handling it tends to deepen and gain a soft sheen instead.
